Early season skiers have been in for a treat this year with fresh dustings of snow falling thick and fast in ski resorts all round the world. Resorts in France, Austria and Switzerland all opened their lifts ahead of their scheduled opening weekends and lucky early birds in Courcheval, France were given a bonus free Saturday of skiing. Whistler, Canada was basking in so much premature powder that skiers were taking to the slopes 13 days early!
The good weather brings optimism for the rest of the season and makes a refreshing change to recent years when the start to proceedings has been disappointing. 2011 will be remembered for its particularly poor start with many resorts being forced to delay their opening times due to warmer climates and 2012 was not much better in some areas with storms playing havoc with the ski conditions.
It seems you lot have been keeping a close eye on the forecast abroad, and the perfect piste conditions it brings, as we have seen a spike in bookings for a Christmas up the mountains. Whilst there is now limited availability there are still some great deals to be had. Check out some of the packages here or call one of our ski specialists on 01273 840308 to discuss the best package for you and your group.
Our quick picks…
If it is a French mountain you wish to take on then Val Thorens, Courcheval and Meribel have all been experiencing up to a meter of the white stuff. For a sunny yet snowy trip then head to one of Europe’s highest resorts, Tignes, where there is snow in bucketloads to be enjoyed.
If is Austria you are after St Anton, Lech and Zurs were top scorers on the snowfall front over the opening weekend with a fresh 10cm sprinkling falling on Friday 6th December.
Although it has been rather sunny this week in Switzerland, the excellent early snowfall has meant that conditions are still very good for skiing and snowboarding. Some Suiss resorts have over 2 metres of snow high up and our recommended resorts would be Saas Fee and Zermatt.
Perhaps the record breaking snowfall we were blessed with last season is the new norm for all seasons ahead. We like to be hopeful…it is Christmas after all 🙂
