ALPE D'HUEZ

Alpe d’Huez is aptly nicknamed ‘L’lle au Soliel’ or ‘the island in the sun!’ Situated on a high plateau in the Grandes Rousses mountainous area of the French Southern Alps, the popular traditional resort boasts glorious sunshine throughout the season. It has the sixth largest skiing area in France encompassing villages of Vaujany, Oz, Villard-Reculas and Auris-en-Osians, granting visitors a total of 200km of ski slopes. The well-designed piste and high altitude skiing gives the area extensive amounts of terrain to explore. The ski area for ADH is like a big bowl, or amphitheatre. Green runs at the bottom at the village, rising to blues, then reds, then blacks at the top. Skiing holidays to Alpe d’Huez offer many fresh powder days every season for you to make your fresh tracks in. Tour de France even hosts one of its competition stages here in the summer.

The super-sized skiing area is ideal for mixed ability groups. The huge beginner’s area and ski school is famous for its outstanding quality of teaching in a wide range of languages. There are wide slopes just above the resort, with gentle gradients for beginners to flourish on. Intermediates will be thrilled as the possibilities are simply endless. A few hot tips include trying ‘Le Signal d’Homme’ and the ‘Plat des Marmottes’ or why not take a helicopter ride over to neighbouring Les Deux Alpes for something different. For any adrenalin-chasing advanced skiers or snowboarders, there is the 2230m vertical drop from ‘Pic Blanc’ which is the highest point of the Grande Rousses Massif. One of the best runs down includes the 16km ‘Sarenne’ run, not for the fainthearted it sits prettily as the longest black run in the world.

If you’re snowboarding in Alpe d’Huez, prepare yourself for excitement. Try freeriding around the phenominal amount of miles of off-piste powder in ‘Gorges de Sarenne’ and Glacier de Sarenne.' Freestyle in one of the two terrain parks with big wedges and rails or just casually cruise down the infinite immaculately pisted runs.
