The two best known skiing areas in Italy are the ‘Milky Way’ and ‘Dolomites Super Ski Pass Area.’ The ‘Milky Way’ has over 400km of famously sunny pisted downhill slopes. The high-altitude skiing peaks at over 2,800 metres above sea level and encompasses resorts Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere, Sestriere, Sansicario, Cesana and Montgenevre. The ‘Dolomites Super Ski Area’ has a colossal 1200km of ski pass linked terrain north-west of Venice. Linking resorts Selva Val Gardena, Val Di Fassa, Alta Badia, Arraba and Cortina. Italy is great for beginners and intermediates, and expert skiers and snowboarders will also be able to find what they’re looking for, try traditional alpine village Courmayeur on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc for decent off-piste.
Italian locals tend to be very friendly and welcoming. Getting There...
In northwest Italy, or the Aosta valley, there is a choice of airports including Brescia Gabrielle D’Annunzio Airport, Turin, Milan, Bergamo, Verona, Geneva or Grenoble. The Dolomites can also be accessed by the Bolzano or Innsbruck airport.
Travelling independently
The buses and trains in Italy are mainly for cities and travelling between them. The easiest way to get from the airport to an Italian ski resort is to hire a car or take advantage of the very reasonably priced private transfers on offer from alp-line.com.
Transfers from Brescia Gabrielle D’Annunzio Airport are available to Val Gardena and Arabba (Dolomiti Superski area) and Selva di Val Gardena (Sella Ronda ski area) and take 2-3 hours.
Turin has roughly 90 minute airport transfers on offer to Courmayeur and La Thuile (Aosta Valley ski area), Claveire, Sauscario, Sauze d’Oulx and Sestriere (Milky Way), Bardonecchia (Piedmont region) and Cervinia.
Verona airport serves Val di Fassa (Dolomiti Superski area), Selva Val Gardena (Sella Ronda circuit) and Posso Tonale (Skirama Adamello-Brenta area) and transfers to these resorts are normally 2 hours.
For self-drivers seeking a road trip heading to the western Dolomite resorts such as Val Gardena, Italy has easy road links to France, Switzerland, Austria and Croatia. Eclipse Ski’s hot tip is to take the road down through Belgium instead of France to avoid paying toll fees. Before setting off, it’s a good idea to check the mountain passes are open. Passes including the Brenner Pass, Mont Blanc Tunnel and Frejus Pass may close under severe weather conditions.
