Wengen

Overview

More than a century old, Wengen is regarded as one of the top destinations in Switzerland for skiing holidays. A sunny sheltered plateau with some of the best scenery in the world, pretty alpine Wengen is the perfect base to ski the exciting Jungfrau Topski area. Accessible only by rail during winter months, the largely pedestrianised streets of Wengen are a magnet for family skiing holidays.

Skiing in Wengen

Sharing the 213km skiing area with lift-linked Grindelwald, the main area shared is named Kleine Scheidegg. Nursery slopes for beginners can not only be found at village level but also just slightly above resort at Wengeneralp. Intermediates have their fair share of blues and reds; the local slopes here make up the largest part of the Jungfrau Topski region. Why not finish off a day’s hard skiing with the 7km run that descends down from the top of the Lauberhorn run back to Wengen? Eclipse Ski recommends the steep Lauberhorn World Cup downhill track and off-piste descent Oh God! for advanced skiers.

Snowboarding in Wengen

The best freeriding terrain can be found in the shadows of the Eiger’s north face peak. Try under the Gummy chairs for some fun darting between forest trees. The area’s boardpark can be found on the Scheidegg Mannlichen area, whilst the half-pipes are a short bus ride away over in Murren.

Accommodation in Wengen

Pretty Swiss ski chalets and hotels are available for family ski packages and group skiing. The après in Wengen is lively and the atmosphere is buzzing at night. Wengen is a particular favourite for British skiing holidays due to its easy accessibility via the funicular railway. It’s also a popular choice for non-skiers as it’s easy to get up the mountain to meet for a spot of lunch. Check out our best travel deals for skiing in Wengen.
