Skiing in Val d'Isere

The resort has been synonymous with sporting events for over 70 years. Snow-sure for skiing holidays from November to May, Val d’Isere is the home to the first World Cup Annual Downhill – the ‘Premiere Neige’ kicking off the European skiing season with a bang. It is part of a handful of resorts world-wide to have staged events in three major international formats – Olympics, World Cup and World Championships.

Val d’Isere sits 1500m above sea level with pistes up to 3450m. It has 150km of pisted skiing itself, extending to 300km together with Tignes. The Espace Killy has 308 pistes spread over 97 efficiently run ski lifts. ‘Val’ skiing holidays are very popular with Brits and the ski resort has even seen nearby purpose built resort La Daille developed at 1785m.

The high altitude skiing in top ski resort Val d’Isere is very, very good. The 300km of pisted downhill skiing gives slopes for all ages and abilities. Beginners are looked after with FREE lifts on the beginner’s nursery slopes with a large ski school. Intermediate skiers are provided with many long, fast wide trails, there is a multitude of over 100 blue and red runs collectively to sweep down the slopes on! Serious skiers are normally the first to run out of trails during a week’s skiing holiday at other resorts, but on the Espace Killy this is not the case. Expert skiers and snowboarders are spoilt in Val with the ‘Face’ 1992 Olympic course, ample off-piste opportunities and world-class snow park.

The quality of a snowboarding holiday in Val d’Isere makes borders return year after year. Freeriders have plenty of pisted and off-piste powder to ride around on. There is terrain to suit everyone from motorways like ‘O’ and ‘Orange’ to steep off-piste track ‘S.’ The off-piste playground with faces such as ‘Les Marmottes,’ or for the fearless try ‘Vallee Perdue’ with its trail only a few feet wide in places and blind sharp bends. Le Fornet offers picturesque snow-laden tree runs for those looking for a pretty relaxed ride. With two half pipes, a superb funpark underneath the Montblac chairlift.

Apres in this top ski resort is second to none for its endless choice and lively atmosphere. The Folie Douce situated at the top of the La Daille gondola is very famous to go and visit for a bevvie. With some establishments open until 4am you’ll be sure to have a memorable night. As Val d’Isere is so well established, it is still a great option for your family ski holiday. Despite the emphasis on partying, the world-class pistes and abundance of activities make the resort a fantastic all-rounder for families and groups alike.
