Grindelwald

Overview

Classic traditional skiing resort Grindelwood is set in the middle of the dramatically scenic Jungfrau region. Famed for its scenery, the whole area is a UNESCO World heritage site. The glacier village is rich with history and its main feature is the extreme mountaineering challenge of the Eiger north face, which towers over the resort. The village is a hub of activity year round with a buzzing atmosphere that attracts family and group skiers.

Skiing in Grindelwald

Grindelwald shares the 213km Jungfrau Topski area with resorts Murren and Wengen. Locally speaking, the resort claims about a quarter of the total skiing area. Beginners will find the Bodmi nursery slopes can easily be reached by the local ski bus and features two beginners’ lifts and magic carpet lifts. The long gondola from the resort base takes you up to Scherckfeld which is the heart of the skiing area. The best intermediate pistes are just above Grindelwald, a nice 8km run that descends down from Oberjoch back to resort. It’s worth getting up the mountain early to catch the powder on Eiger’s glacier. Expert skiers will be challenged by the Lauberhorn World cup downhill track, Black Rock and a vertical near Kanonenrohr.

Snowboarding in Grindelwald

Grindelwald has a range of steep off-piste runs which are perfect for freeriding parallel to the pisted tracks. Oberjoch is home to the boardpark which has rails and a couple of huge kickers.

A mixture of pretty catered ski chalets and hotels for skiing holidays sit at the base of the skiing area. There is a choice for over 50 decent bars and restaurants all contributing to Grindelwald’s lively après atmosphere. The kids’ club here is known for its excellence, making Grindelwald ideal for family skiing.
