Tyrolean village Obergurgl and gondola linked Hochgurgl are the twin gems linked up high in the Otz Valley. Recently voted the best snow-sure resort in Europe, it benefits from a large, fun mountain. Obergurgl has a serene relaxed feeling, with car-free zones and bursting with alpine charm. It’s quite hard for locals to drive to, so the slopes don’t get too busy and you can enjoy quiet and queue-free on your skiing holiday to Obergurgl.
Obergurgl is slightly larger due to having more hotels than Hochgurgl. It’s the highest parish of Austria sitting at 1930m boasting an excellent ski record. They’re the first to open in Austria with the long season commencing from November to May, ideal for early or late season skiing holidays. Obergurgl is postcard-pretty and the traditional area has lots of doorstep skiing, making British skiers and snowboarders return year after year. Restaurants and hotels are family owed by locals with many ski chalets which are fully catered or self-catered.

Coupled with Hochgurgl, the skiing area gives access to 110km of downhill skiing, with 39 pistes served by 24 ski lifts to keep you busy on your Austrian skiing holiday. The gondola that interlinks over to Hochgurgl only takes 9 minutes and has breathtaking scenery so you definitely won’t get bored on your picturesque journey across the valley. Beginners will find excellent ski schools in this quality area, the best slopes are by Gaisberg or Mahdstuhl chair lifts. The snow sure skiing area has lots of reds spread out for intermediates, and expert skiers should try runs at the top of Hohe Mut above the centre of the village. If you’re looking for moguls to bounce down, try the Top-Wurmkogl II piste, or for dizzy heights of off piste skiing above 3000m ask for an experienced guide to show you the way.

Snowboarding in Obergurgl you will find the big wide open pisted runs ideal for carving as the runs are completely devoid of trees. There is excellent steep off piste fresh powder terrain over both resorts that can be ridden at speed.

Obergurgl is home to the ‘Top Mountain Star’ restaurant. With 360° panoramic views the gleaming bistro at the top of the peak is perched at 3,080m with architecture mirroring the jagged peaks around it. The resort can be party-packed at night with a variety live music and evening fun centred on one main street in resort.
