We know where to go for our summer sun fix in July and August, but do we know where to go for our skiing holidays? Yes, there are the famous ski resorts that everyone knows, especially in the French Alps. But, what about the undiscovered ski resorts, the little gems that are tucked away? Take Spain for example, did you know you can ski in Spain? If you didn’t know, you won’t also know that there are 34 ski resorts offering skiing and snowboarding during the winter months.
You can enjoy powdery slopes covering over 1,154 kilometres all served by 312 ski lifts. The largest resorts offer 160 km of slopes with the highest altitude being 3,282 m. These ski resorts offer excellent facilities with some resorts awarded with 4.2 stars out of 5. Spain’s top ski resort is Baqueira/Beret and it’s also the largest resort. The highest altitude resort is Sierra Nevada – Pradollano and the best value for money resort is Formigal.
Top 4 ski resorts in Spain
Baqueira/Beret – Catalonia, Lleida Val d’Aran
This ski resort is located in Val d’Aran in Catalonia. It offers skiing and snowboarding, with 160 km of slopes, plus 5 km of ski routes. It is served by 29 lifts, with elevations between 1,500 and 2,610 m. There are 80 km of beginner’s slopes, 60 km of intermediate and 20 km of advanced runs. The season is from late November until late-April. Baqueira Beret ski resort is probably the most well known in Spain and is located in the Pyrenees. The ski resort is just 0.1 km from the village of Baqueira, Salardú (4 km), Arties (7 km), Vielha e Mijaran (14 km), València d’Àneu (14 km) and Esterri d’Àneu (19 km) away.
Formigal – Aragon, Huesca
This ski resort is located in the Province of Huesca, Aragon on the French/Spanish border. It offers skiing and snowboarding, with 137 km of slopes, served by 16 lifts. The elevations are between 1,501 and 2,251 m. There are 47 km of slopes for beginners, 70 km for intermediates and 20 km for advanced. The season is from late November until mid-April. Formigal ski resort is one of the most modern ski resorts in the Pyrenees and Spain for that matter. It’s connected to the valleys of Tres Hombres-Sextas, Izas-Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet. It offers both easy slopes and challenging pistes. The ski resort is just 1.1 km from the village centre of Formigal and Sallent de Gállego is 5 km away.
La Molina/Masella – Alp2500 – Catalonia Girona/ Barcelona
This ski resort is located in the Province of Girona, Catalonia in the Province of Barcelona. It offers skiing and snowboarding, with 141 km of slopes, served by 27 lifts. The elevations are between 1,616 and 2,531 m. There are 76 km of runs for beginners, 47 km for intermediates and 18 km for advanced skiers. The season is from late November until late April. The ski resort is just 0.5 km from La Molina, Masella (0.5 km) and Alp (7 km) drive away.
Sierra Nevada – Pradollano – Andalusia, Granada
This ski resort, Sierra Nevada – Pradollano is located in the Province of Granada. It offers skiing and snowboarding, with 106.8 km of slopes, served by 17 lifts. The elevations are between 2,100 and 3,282 m. There are 50 km of beginner runs, 49 km for intermediate and 7.8 km for advanced skiers. The season is from late November until early May. The ski resort is just 0.2 km from the village of Pradollano, Monachil (22 km) and Granada is conveniently just (34 km) away.
