Beautiful Switzerland conjures up images of snow capped mountains, clean fresh air, skiing and snowboarding. It is one of the leading destinations for ski sports in the world and the Swiss in particular love this favourite pastime. In fact, 2.5 million Swiss residents take to the slopes on skis and around 370,000 on snowboards and that’s not to even mention the number of foreigners who take to the Swiss ski slopes year on year.
However, it’s true to say that visitors to Switzerland don’t just go for the skiing, they go because of the lifestyle and who wouldn’t want this truly amazing lifestyle? Favoured locations are Crans Montana in the heart of the Swiss Alps in the canton of Valais and Flims Waldhaus in the canton of Graubünden.
Crans Montana
Sits at an elevation of 1,500 m (4,920 ft) above sea level with magnificent views of the Valais Alps and Weisshorn. The skiing area is made up of 140 km (87 mi) of pistes, and includes the Plaine Morte Glacier. It is topped by the Pointe de la Plaine Morte at 2,927 m (9,600 ft). It’s most famous for alpine ski racing and hosting the World Championships in 1987 and its mountain pop rock festival held in the winter. In September it welcomes the European Tour’s Omega European Masters, professional golf tournament. The Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie bicycle racing finishes has been held there many times and in 1984 hosted the finish of the 20th stage of the Tour de France. The Flimerstein is a majestic mountain towering 2,695 m (8,842 ft) and dominates the Swiss skyline. This well connected region has 220km of pistes, which cover an area of at least 100 square km with snow assured slopes. Flims has retained its traditional alpine flavour, and there are many streams and lakes in north Flims Waldhaus. The name Flims derives from “fluminae” which means “many streams” in Latin. Flims often hosts international competitions such as the FIS World Championship in skiing and the Burton European Open in snowboarding.
